Outdoor Kitchen & Wood Fired Bread Oven
Welcome to our developing outdoor kitchen where we offer a holistic experience of nutritious and delicious food. In the fall of 2006, about ninety participants lovingly used their hands and feet to dig up and process clay, and then form a wood-fired bread oven. Each time we fire it up a friendly dragon sends his smoke into the air. The oven is used for community events and educational programs.
After the oven was built we expanded our kitchen area by building a protective shelter over it. The four poles are locust trees given to us by Mr. Hagedorn, our next-door neighbor. A small group of teenagers, guided by Jason Bourne, Eileen Frechette, and Vicki Mansoor stripped the trees and build the simple structure. We would like to thank Jason and his son Harrison who also built us a sturdy 300 lb. wedging table. Further development has been a water-catchment system. Later the area will include a sink for washing dishes, storage areas, shelving, and racks for drying herbs. This summer we will take our work farther as we plant some different grains to be used in our breads.

“For our building project the third grade, assisted by the kindergartens built a wood-firing bread oven at Homeadow Song Farm. The oven is used for community gatherings and is also used by the kindergarten classes that visit the farm to bake their weekly loaves of bread...
Along the way there were many other related activities for participants. We did different tests to determine the strength of the clay mixtures. We needed to cut a lot of straw and move and sort rocks. We calculated the dimensions of the oven. Once the clay was ready, we made small bricks with embedded treasures to be used near the door of the oven. Children also worked with beeswax to bring the imagination of the dragon forth into reality, bringing new ideas along the way. We had many parents who led the different job groups with the children.
Many thanks to all who helped this project to be such a success! Special thanks to the people at Homeadow Song Farm who have opened their hearts and provided such wonderful opportunities to the children of the Waldorf school for so many years.”
